No, no problem clattnow. We grow all sorts, at the moment there are beans, there have been potatoes, lettuce, beetroot, radish, courgettes, garlic and a variety of onion types, squash, cabbages, blackcurrants and many other soft fruits and fruit trees. Not so good with root veg though, but we are hoping to follow Chris's idea of growing carrots in a crate next year as we think this soil isn't too good for carrots. However we have had no problems with green, white or blackfly and we don't use any harmful sprays or powders on our plants, just these Calendula and a whole host of weeds and plenty of birds!
The yellow or orange petals can be dried and used as fake saffron, or used fresh to brighten up a mixed leaf salad. cheap saffron that you buy in some arab markets is actually dried calendula petals. you get the colour but not the glorious fragrance of saffron. if you are colouring rice to go with a curry, real saffron would be wasted.
Good morning Guernsey Donkey, Amyn, and Fidgetbones, nice to see you all I have certainly generated a conversation here. Your vegetables sound marvellous you will have a great salad there and some wonderful fruit pies, jellies and jams. My mum used to grow blackcurrant bushes to make jams with pectin. I am glad that the calendula will add colour lets hope it does not take over also yes will certainly think of using it in a curry or two if it goes wrong but otherwise will leave it in the garden as I love a pretty garden. Glad you have calendula down in Essex sounds great have you any photographs? Thank you all for taking an interest in mine. Great to see.
