Diplodemias

I have lots of thriving mandevillas but one long garden facing north has what were sold as diplodemias

they are very leggy and don't seem to thrive like the others they don't put out feelers but I want bushes anyway

should I prune them and if so how much?

i feed regularly as they are with other flowering plants

i hope you can help

thanks

Hi Liz (good name that!). Dipladenia is just another name for Mandevilla. They do not like growing in the shade - they need full sun - so that may be the problem as to why they are growing leggy. They should be pruned in the late Winter/early Spring back to 3 to 4 buds of the main shape you want them to be, but I would think about re-locating them. Liz x

  • Thank you Liz and Liz, between you, you've answered my questions. I recently bought a pair of pink tinged and red varieties with a view to brightening my south facing garden and, partly due to both having new 'leggy' growth as well as buds, have been contemplating whether or not to pot on and place them where I think both they and I will be happy, or take a chance and plant them in the positions I have in mind. I shall go for the 'bold' option xx
