Agapanthus

I have a non flowering  blue agapanthus. The leaves are lush and in great condition.

It is contained in a large pot as Mr Titchmarsh suggested on a tv programme, and I have fed it.

I don't want to give up on it as it was given to me by a neighbour many years ago, who has passed away. It has flowered In the past.  It is in a sunny position, for about half of the day.

Does anyone have any ideas please. Thank you.

Hi brenda. I have several Agapanthus. One that had lots of flowers last year has only had two this year and the others haven't done anything apart from look healthy. I read on another post that it is important to keep them watered all the time and I had mine in pots in the greenhouse to overwinter so I wasn't great at watering them. I'm going to take more care of them this season as they are a mixture of colours. I would just keep looking after it well and fingers crossed it may be more floriferous next year. Interestingly the only one of mine that flowered was not put into the greenhouse as it is in a fairly sheltered area outside my back door.

  • Thank you. I will hang in there then.

Last year I had hardly any of the smaller white variety flower, these are just planted in the garden, and this year I had loads, but did nothing different.  The blue ones haven't flowered for about three years, but they look so very healthy. I will leave them potted and see what happens next year. All the best.

Hi Brenda, agapanthus can take a while to resettle in new pots before they flower.  as I understand it, they prefer to have their roots quite confined. If the pot you planted it in is very much bigger than the last one, it's probably too busy making new roots rather than flowers. I'm sure it just needs time and lots of sun, as they are Mediterranean plants.

Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.

  • Ive struggled in the past to get them to bloom, it seem to have had  more success since I started feeding them. I try and do this once a week with tomato feed And keep going after they've bloomed. I've adopted Monty's suggestion of doing this on fertiliser Friday!

  • Thank you everyone. I will change to tomato feed, and give that a try. They have been in a pot for about five years, perhaps next year will be my year.
