Composting

So have have small amount  in black compost bin for some time ,but have just started  to add kitchen  waste to it and old tomato plants  soil and horse  manure.

But I have noticed I now have woodlice  and slugs in it also flys so my question is  is that normal ??

Many thanks

Perfectly normal. They help to break down the compost.

  • Thanks that's good ☺

  • do you mean weeds seeding or weeds regrowing in your compost? I try not to compost the invasive weeds like bindweed etc, I instead bring them to local waste disposal site where they can be hot composted and this will kill them or you can 'drown' them in a bucket of water for a month and this will also kill them!

Turned and aired my two compost bins today - added some bits of loo roll cardboard too.  Agree - don't put weed roots or bindweed in the composter (got plenty without giving them lovely enriched compost to grow in!)

Did you see Monty's compost 'bins' on GW yesterday?!?!

I was quite impressed with Monty's compost bins. It's motivated me to give mine more attention and turning the compost heap is at the top of my list of things to do...image
