Burgundy coloured hydrangea

A neighbour has a beautiful burgundy coloured hydrangea growing. They are very elderly and not well so I don't want to disturb them with questions about a name or if I could have a cutting.

I have googled 'dark red hydrangea' and only come up with Wim's Red. What is throwing me is that Wim's red seems to go through white, pink before becoming dark red and that's not what I have seen.

Does anyone have any other names for a dark burgundy red hydrangea - I think it's a mop head (I can see I am going to have to photograph it)

    My friend has a pink hydrangea that 'ages' to a rich burgundy colour. When at Tatton a fortnight ago there were literally hundreds of hydrangeas everywhere - but no burgundy ones.

    My brother had a hydrangea that seemed to have solid burgundy flowers in his garden, but unfortunately had no idea of the name. All he could tell me was that it was an old variety, but the point is, this was about 15 years ago and he lived in Eire, so perhaps worth checking there?

    Vanilla fraise goes dark red/burgundy in autumn as the white fades to pink and then eventually this colour. My only inkling.

    This YouTube clip may show something similar to the hydrangea you are searching for. If you spot it, the collection holder may be able to tell you the name of the variety.

    We have one, it's more maroon or wine coloured. Asked my mum she doesn't have the label :-( but said she paid more than average for it.

    Of course, the colours of some hydrangeas change according to the acidity of the soil.

    Hydrangea mac. King George is a deep red which, according to descriptions, takes on a much deeper colour, sometimes described as 'deep mauve'  when grown in acid soil
