Dahlia help required

imageimage

Can anyone help please - I have some very precious dahlias grown by my late father which have now developed yellowing and stunted growth. Some of my newer dahlias also have yellowing leaves but before I resign myself to the fact this is probably a virus and I will lose my whole collection can anyone confirm please.

It might be a nutrient deficiency.  Try a general foliar feed which contains Iron, Magnesium and micronutrients for a quick fix.  Epsom salts also always worth a go as magnesium deficiency is common.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

As Bob says - 1 tbsp epsom salts in 2 gallons of water - mix well to dissolve and water. Hopefully that'll do it

Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
  • That's great thanks - I had been using Seaweed extract but perhaps not enough - will give your suggestions a try as desperate to save these.

  • Thanks Verdun - I will do that - do you use it as a spray or at the base of the plant. ?

They won't die on you Helen. Seaweed extract usually takes weeks to take effect.Keep your eyes open though for the usually nasties Snails Slugs and Ear Wigs. Verdun mentions Tomatoe feed. Not a bad idea, fish bone and blood sprinkled around the base will be cheaper long term.

  • Thanks - will probably try a combination of ideas with the Epsom salts - I often use fish bone and blood so will try this too !  Luckily slugs haven't been too much of a problem on my allotment - they seem to like the rhubarb so have stayed away from the flower bed !
