First time !

I have just had my drive done and there is an area at the side which i am going to plant. I will order top soil to fill it , it measures 11m x 1m x 0.2 deep.. Should i just fill the area and leave it to settle before planting , water it or compact it down . My oh wants to compact it but it doesnt seem right, help !

I wouldn't compact it just tamp it down gently as you level the top soil and just allow it to settle naturally. Compacting can reduce the air in the soil and some air is essential for good root development.
