Ant Problem

I have a few ants nests that have appeared on my lawn and I own a pair of very nosy cats, is it possible for me to put down ant powder with the cats around?

Maybe you can solve this problem by putting a wire cage over the ants' nest + beastly powder then your cats will not be able to access the stuff. Be sure to fix the cage firmly to the ground with something like very long wire staples.

  • I know this sounds awful, but no worse than ant powder.  I had a problem with ants nests and poured a kettle of boilng water on them and they never came back.

  • Don't use boiling water for an ants nest on the lawn. I learned this the hard way! My lawn took ages to recover. Nematodes work well for ants. They don't kill them but the ants move away.

You can get ant gel which comes in pots that have holes only big enough for the ants: importantly this means that the cats can't get it on their paws and lick it off no matter how much they tap the pot of curiosity!

  • Ok. Admittedly my ant nests were beside my patio so no harm was done.   Ive tried the pots in the past but there were too many ants.  I too have cats and they don't seem to have reacted to the ant powder but maybe nematodes is the way to go.

  • Yes, I've used boiling water on the patio with good results but it didn't occur to me that it would kill the grass as well as the ants when I tried it on the lawn! I've also tried the bait pots but haven't found them very effective.
