Unknown celmatis

Hello. Having just cut down some trees in our garden a very old clematis has suddenly started growing like mad. There are no flowers, and won't be this year I suppose, so I've no idea what variety it is. It was obviously planted long before we moved in, and perhaps even before the trees grew so big. Can anyone tell me what I should do about pruning (or not!) this year? If it flowers next year I might have a better idea what to do, but for now....? Thank you.

I would leave it alone now and next year you might have a lovely surprise.

I agree with Ladybird.  If you prune it now you may cut off next year's flowering shoots, if it's an early species or variety.

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Thank you all so much. I was amazed at how vigorous it's becoming. I've tried planting other clematises here before and none of them have thrived. Can't wait for next year to see what I've got! image

a photo would help with some elimination even if it can't make a definite ID.

I've had to look at this apophatically and say that that's the one thing I know it isn'tI might try to get a photo, but there's not much to see except that it's long, thin and healthy-looking. image Thanks anyway.
