They're not allowed to touch them while there might be nests or fledglings Pansy. The farmers round here usually do it in October November time.

I would invest in a little scaffold tower, very handy I wouldn't do without. I got a long reach hedge strimmer 10years ago, its a sharp with a kawasaki TJ27 engine, only problems I had with it in 10years is broke pull string about 2weeks ago and I shattered the blades last year with the amount of use its had,I do gardening for a living so it gets a lot of use on edges far bigger and meaner, other than that its been excellent.  But looking round on the web I found on mowdirect that some Mitox have a kawasaki engine.

I would recommended any edge strimmer with a kawasaki engine, I use a normal hand held one aswell which has been very reliable. Got a stihl as well which is very good and light but its got wide blades for thick branchs so not used so much. Just stay away from chinese rubbish, I have one with the chainsaw / hedge attachment its can be made so long it bends image and its gutless, I think it be better as a washing pole.

Thanks for your advice Perki. And everyone else with their inputs.

Going to visit my local Mitox dealer tomorrow and check out their products. They look pretty good and come with 3 year warrenty. Also using the Kawasaki TJ27 engine and for half the price of a Stihl, I think that's a steal. No pun intended.

    UPDATE:

I went for a Cobra (fairly new brand). 5-1 Multi tool kit.

Powered by a Kawasaki tj27e engine.

Comes with pruner, grass trimmer, brush cutter, hedge trimmer and extension pole attachments.

Quality is really good. I can recommended this to any starter gardener.

And at the price of £479.99 (2016). It's great vaue for money. And you have the reliability of the popular Kawasaki engine.

The hedge is a thing of beauty.  Worth tending to.

I let my small stretch of privet, that previously looked great, get a bit carried away because I prefer the unkempt look.  I am now fighting to get it back under control and thicken it out.  But I'm getting there.  So stay on top of it.

How many cuts a year is recommended?

@tetley, that hedge of yours how many times do you trim it?  Does it remain that size and height?  Is that how a leylandii  hedge is supposed to look?  I do admire yours.

I've got a small cyprus goldcrest currently in a pot.  I'd love to put it in the ground.  But I don't want it as a big tree.  I wonder if I could keep it to about 6 ft with trimming?

yeah I have to say the petrol machine gets heavy and tiring pretty quickly. But it does cut through it like a hot knife through butter.
