Hi, does anyone have any suggestions for what I could plant in this space that I have just cleared?
I have left an unidentified small tree (which no doubt will have roots right where I want to plant something), some ferns (not sure what kind) which have grown by themselves and some foxgloves, which I will remove once they have finished flowering.

Hardy geraniums, Brunnera, Tiarella, Hostas. It really depends on what sort of a 'look' you are after in your garden Personally I love the foxgloves and if you leave them to set their seed then in 2 years time (foxgloves produce a rosette in their first year then flower in their second year) you will have a further show to attract bees to your garden and you can remove any seedlings that are in the 'wrong' place.

I'm aiming for a woodland look, but it would be nice if it could include some colour (purples, blues), with a mixture of heights - I did try growing some verbena bonariensis from seed this year, but unfortunately I killed them with kindness and overwatered them. And I'm with you there Ladybird, I do have a fondness for foxgloves. They've self-seeded all over the garden and I left most of them for the bees, I can see new ones coming through, presumably from last year.
Well I love the look of your garden and its potential. Brunnera 'Jack Frost' will give you beautiful silver foliage with blue forget-me-not type flowers. There are legions of geraniums with the purples and blues you like. I particularly like geranium phaeum and I have all the colours in that (Ithink!). For low growing plants you could try Ajuga - that comes in different foliage colours and is quite undemanding. I have just acquired a new plant that I saw on one of the Gardener's World programmes - Gillenia trifoliata. It has slender stems with lots of dainty white flowers. All the plants I've mentioned in this post are quite happy in partial shade.
Awesome, thanks Ladybird, I like the look of Gillenia trifoliata. I agree, there is a lot of potential, especially because of the trees at the back, it's a bit all over the place at the moment though!
Tiarella, anemones, ferns, dwarf rhodendronds if the soil is acid enough,would look great as a woodland area.
