Hostas indoors

I love Hostas (as you may have guessed by the name) so was really intrigued when I saw an article about keeping them as indoor plants.

I've never considered it as I had always believed that they needed a good winter spell. The article suggests putting them somewhere cool over winter, around 4°C......is this really a low enough temp for them to do well and get nice and good growth year on year? Is there any point in keeping them as an indoor plant if you still need to overwinter them somewhere cool? I suppose the one big benefit is you'll not be feeding the slugs!

On Gardeners World recently there was an article about a man who holds the national collection of miniature hostas and he seemed to have all of his in a cold greenhouse. That was the show which showed us the HYDROPOD cuttings propagator which provoked some interest in the Forum.

  • Oh, yes, I remember that.  He had a wonderful collection.

I can't imagine keeping a Hosta in my living room though!

I think it would be cruel to keep a hosta in a living room. The greenhouse looked fabulous though with all those teeny little hostas. I never knew they came as tiny as that as well as the great big beauties.

  • I agree, I just don't see how a Hosta could thrive in an environment with central heating!

They were lovely, and it's really encouraged me to look at the smaller varieties again, rather than just sticking with the larger leaf ones.
