Fruit tree ID please

Hi all, does anyone have any idea what tree this is? (I'm hoping someone will say it's a blackthorn and the fruits are sloes! 
)

Not a sloe as these grow on extremely prickly shrubs - bit like hawthorn. It looks like a plum.
hmmm - the blackthorn round here have jagged edged leaves and the fruits aren't as big, but I'm not sure.
It may well be a damson of some sort - they're lovely too.

Ok cool thanks both, I'm not sure it's a plum, the fruit doesn't get much bigger than it is and stays kinda hard.
Will google damson images though, you could be onto something there! Damson gin?! Ooooh if I must!!

they don't really look like blackthorn stems, or leaves, too broad. Ladybird is right re the thorns. No thorns, no blackthorn.

Damson cheese is rather nice too.
Seconded! My favourite is with a stilton.
It looks like a wild form of a plum, probably a bullace, or similar. Good for jams and makes excellent wine.

Yes and you'll find the birds generally won't take them. Damsons are a narrower shape, more pointed at the stalk end and ripen later.
