Rosemary and lavender border
HI there,
I have a 5m long border which is 70cm wide and I am trying to prepare it as a herb border.
The primary features will be lavender and rosemary which is interspersed with sage (for colour), fennel (for texture), basil (for smell), oregano and thyme (for ground cover). I will repeat the same pattern over and over.
The soil was extremely dense clay and quite terrible. I've added lots of organic matter into it to assist with the drainage and have ordered some grit to which i'll also dig in.
What is the best way to plant the lavender and rosemary? I've read that they should be done on a mound and brick or something underneath to aid with drainage and keep water away from the roots?.. Is this right? How can i give the plants the best start?..
thanks!!

Both lavender and rosemary like a free draining soil so the grit you are going to add will help with this. Yes it is an idea to plant on a mound of well draining soil in the bed - not sure about the brick. Basil and oregano need warmth and basil may struggle to survive over winter so cuttings or seeds should be used for propagation or grow in pots and move into a sheltered area over Winter.
Yeah, defo going to take basil in over winter.
So do I literally create some type of higher point on the border and plant the lavender and rosemary into it?
shud I dig grit through out the border or just where the lavender and rosemary are going?
thanks for ur help
Just dig in the grit where the lavender and rosemary are going to go and if you are happy that it seems free draining then I would just put them in and you could put extra grit in under the plants too to make the mound that you spoke of.
