slugs & snails
Has anyone out there got any tips about deterring slugs & snails from eating my plants - I have cats so cannot use pesticides ?

You will have to pick them off and stamp on them or cut them in half with a hoe. This has been quite a topic so far this year so if you type snail and slugs into the 'Search the site' box you'll find lots of posts.
Beer traps, soaked porridge oats, a sacrificial lettuce. All these things will attract them, so put them near the slugs overnight quarters, rather than near the plants you want to protect and gather up the varmints in the morning when you do the watering. Watering early in the day is an all round 'good thing'. It gives plants water when they will probably need it most, it allows the ground to dry out before evening when the slugs come out to feed, making it more difficult for them to slide about and it saves you time in the evening when you could be concentrating on a glass of wine.
