horrible little fox

Hello, we last night saw a fox in our garden we suspected we had a visitor in the garden but no idea it was a fox!!! i know where its coming from under the gate at side of the house. i have temp blocked this off with paving slabs and bricks. Whats the smallest gap they can get under? I know they can dig but luckily i have concrete inside and a public path where i have soil on the inside my boundary.  the one last night we came within 2 ft of each other which was scary. i know i can not hurt them but are there any deterrents i can use like smell of a plant? also do they climb?

    Scary? it's a fox, not a lion

If you clap your hands loudly they run away.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • It'll be far more scared of you! They can climb and jump quite high if they really want to, so it's not always easy to make any garden "fox-proof".  Two slightly annoying /worrying things about them are

    a) they often have mange which can affect domestic pets such as dogs, and

    b) fox poo is sticky and smells awful, and dogs seem to love rolling in it.

I have a dog who would lose in a confrontation with one. Explains the awful smell of my dog who then hates the immediate wash. just hope they can only climb 5ft 5in fence so they cant jump over my 6ft fence. lol.

  • No need to worry about a confrontation. The fox would run a mile - or several!

I'm saddened by the fear of the natural world.

It's not your fault Kev, the popular press love a good scare story. We don't really have dangerous animals in the UK but one incident makes a good story and takes precedence over real life.

I posted this recently on another thread and I can assure you Kev I had to be very circumspect to get the video from which this comes. The fox that visits me is a nuisance at times but I would be the worse off if the wildlife abandoned me.

Was that for me Fidget? I love my fox and all the animals that visit,

Or was that for my really bad photography? In which case it was totally justified!
