Sawfly on Cherry Trees

I have three cherry trees (mature, over 12 years) in the garden all of which have been attacked and devastated by sawfly, I think. The leaves are mottle with brown spots and the leaves fall off, cherries shrivel and the trees, which should look at their best now, are looking leafless and lifeless. One of the trees is short enough to spray (I think Pyrethrin) but the others are far too tall. Has anyone out there any suggestions? I am loathe to cut them down, but they look ghastly and are very sick.
