Poor potato & onion crop

image

Can anyone give me some tips on what kind of potatoes & onions I could plant next year to make sure that I get a much bigger crop! Really disappointed but it looks like importing English varieties doesn't work in my German soil...

This was all I got out of about 12 potato plants and 4 rows of onions. image

Both are heavy feeders. What is your soil like? heavy/light  or acid/chalky.

Heavy clay improved with lots of organic matter  such as home made compost or well rootted farm yard manure will produce heavy crops. For onions I would also add some calcified seaweed. For  all my veg, I give a handful of blood fish and bonemeal per square yard,  sprinkled on the soil and mixed in before planting.

The soil is a little heavy but I thought I had put enough compost in it last year to compensate - the weeds love it! image
