My cactus has turned black at the bottom and snapped off, what do I do?

I went to water my cactus earlier today (it's like 5 little cacti in one pot) and I noticed one of the little sections bottom half had turned completely black! I tried to get a closer look and it had actually completely snapped off! What caused this to happen, and how do I save the rest of the plant?

It sounds to me as if some rot has set in, probably due to over-watering.  Keep your cactus soil dry - only water very occasionally, and hopefully the rot won't spread.
Keeping it in a sunny spot will help to dry the soil out, but if the cactus has been on a shadier windowsill until now, you'll have to acclimatise it to the sunshine in stages, so that it doesn't scorch.

'You must have some bread with it me duck!'

  • Okay, thanks a lot! I'm assuming the rot that remains in the pot can just be cut out?

    Yes, I'd cut it away.
