Get yourself a head torch for gardening at night, hands free, it makes life so much easier. First time neighbours saw me gardening at night, they thought there was a prowler/burglar......nope, just me in my jammies, wellies and head-torch with a pot of salt hunting for slugs
A few Years back I would be out in the garden at all times during the night in my jammies. The ladies on here of a certain age will probably guess the reason why!!! Past days! It certainly got me over my fear of the dark!

'Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement' - Helen Keller
My next door neighbour always cuts his grass after dark. We can only assume he thinks the grass won't see the mower coming and so can't get out of the way!
The other night I must admit the temptation to hack away at a couple of shrubs, the moon was out and everything as still as a mill pond.
Too still, the slightest rustle would have no doubt alerted the local bobby or animal rescue centre, the prospect of either being handcuffed or caught in a big net stop me in my tracks.

I think it's permissible so long as you're not using a buzzsaw or mowing the lawn.

The nights have been wonderful though.
