Lawn grass problem

Hi. My garden had bald patches so i planted grass seed which i bought locally. problem is the new grass seed is growing really tall compared to the rest of the lawn, The new seed can get up to a foot in height while my lawn stays at a few inches. So now i have to cut the new grass every week as apposed to every few weeks. is there such a thing as a slow growing grass seed or short seed i can use? thx.. ps. im in the uk

I would imagine you improved the soil where you planted the seed? added compost or something similar, this will cause the grass to grow quicker, plus new plants tend to grow a bit quicker than established ones anyway.

I'd be more concerned about the old bit of lawn if you only need to cut every few weeks.

It suggests it isn't growing terribly well. Is it very mossy rather than mainly grass? It's low growing. If the garden's shady, for instance, it will be mossier as grass doesn't do so well in shade. It would also account for the bare patches, as the ground could be compacted as well. All these things prevent healthy grass  image

it was covered in moss last year but had a company out who fixed that. The patching i did was because of my dog (a bitch) peeing on it. still i think a slow growing seed would cure my problems if there is such a thing? thx

In that case, I think treehugger is right. Some grass seed is also treated or mixed with food so that it gets off to a quick start, so that could easily be the reason it's growing more quickly.

There isn't a slow growing seed as far as I'm aware, but others might know better than me. I think there's stuff you can use to prevent quicker growth after cutting, but I've no idea how successful it is.

Cutting grass regularly improves it's appearance and growth habit though, so I think you just need to resign yourself to getting the mower out more often Davy!  image

I've seen this product sold in my local DIY (clearance) shop - InExcess. Whether it works I don't know.

Green Thumb also claim to be able to apply a 'slow-mow' treatment
