Wasps

I'm a month ahead on numbers of wasps nests compared to last year. Just done a really busy one that must of been a month ahead in its own right.

Also done some tiny ones aswell. Iv broken them open and released the Queen....I wonder if these tiny ones are second attempts and if they will make a third after iv evicted them

I have two wasp nests in my garden, one in a wall basket and one in a wooden bird box. As long as I know where they are I leave them alone as they are beneficial insects. I do treat them with respect though as I suffer from anaphylaxis if I get stung.

I only worry if they are in a really inconvenient place, but to be fair, they never last long in my garden because the badgers dig them out and eat all the grubs.

Is Jerome a professional 'wasp exterminator' I wonder - he seems to be kept very busy with wasps' nests ...... or maybe he just has a large acreage ....... image

I was at a very rural café the other day and saw that they had a Waspinator hanging by the kitchen door - apparently it works really well and they get very few wasps in that area of the garden or in the cafe and kitchen.  Keeping wasps at bay without harming them - sounds perfect.

  • We've found waspinators to be really good at keeping them away from the decking and fruit trees

Thanks DFA and DDITH. I had never heard of a Waspinator so I will now go and investigate as it will be useful for me and like PF I would much rather have wasps than not have them.

I'm happy for wasps to nest in the garden but I did have to get rid of one this year as they were under the  floorboards and we came home to find about 30 of them in our bedroom and another 15 in the bathroom.  Hubby is terrified of them so I'm afraid they had to go.

Hi ladybird, like yourself I suffper from anaphylaxis if I get stung by be or wasps, so Epi pens at the ready, I've seen waspsinator advertise, but never thought to use them, although they are life threatening to my self I could never harm them, and last week I disturbed two nests in one day, then one fly into my van as I was driving lol not my day.

As I understand it, the best effect is produced by installing the Waspinator in early spring, when queen wasps are prospecting for nest sites.
