If you cut the central flower spike off and continue feeding and watering, you may get some smaller flower spikes. If they've finished too, remove them as well and allow the plant to die back. Once dead, tidy up the dead stems and leave the roots in the pot for next year.

    .

And watch out for American grey aphids, I have had a lot this year, sneaky things, but I have managed them by spraying insecticide!

Sorry to mooch in (not really) but how does one know when lupins are "done". Mine flowered like mad throught their first flush this year but the second flush was poor to non existant. Might it be time to split them?

The new one I put in last year is 2nd flushing away! The others...nothing much.

Basically when the flowers are going to seed and there are no more coming. Are yours in a pot or the soil? If in a pot, they may well be overcrowded, or the soil exhausted, or both.

They're in the soil but it's a raised bed and I don't know how long they've been in there. I added topsoil and chicken manure at the begining of the year but they are huge so I reckon they've used up their stuff.

This'll be a laugh if I have to dig them up. image I've no chance of splitting them. How can I salvage some? Can I pull bits of round the outside?
