Hamamalis for fragrance?

sven1980sven1980 Posts: 17

Hi

I would like to get a Hamamalis Witch Hazel but would like one that is beautifully fragrant. there are so many different cultivars and I know some have little or no fragrance. Any recommendations please?

Many thanks

Hi Sven, I'm bumping this up because I would like recommendations too.

Personally I find Hammamelis mollis has the strongest scent

The one I tried for several years was not very impressive. I have to confess that when I had the garden properly bordered I got OH to dig it out.

It did not perform well enough and was literally a "waste of space. "

I visited a famous hamamelis collection at Kampenhout in Belgium and was impressed with the perfume of Danny which also had coppery coloured flowers so I bought one but he didn't like my garden unfortunately.

I tried Orange Peel a few years later after some milder winters and it is doing very well and has lovely perfume and flower colour.   Jelena, named after the lady of the couple who bred so many good ones, also has good perfume and yellow flowers.

    Thanks everyone for your advice....

I contacted Bluebell Nursery in Leicestershire who sell many cultivars of Hamamelis and their reply was as followed...

    ''Good afternoon,

Thanks for your email. The two best Witch Hazel we grow for scented flowers are as follows:

    Hamamelis x intermedia 'Aphrodite'
    http://www.bluebellnursery.com/catalogue/trees/Hamamelis/H/2878

    and

    Hamamelis x intermedia 'Aurora'
    http://www.bluebellnursery.com/catalogue/trees/Hamamelis/H/3074

Both flower as young specimens but obviously the best scent will be seen once the plant is established and large enough to be covered with masses of flower as opposed to the few you will see on a young specimen. If scent is your goal, planting it with plenty of shelter from strong wind is very helpful so that the scent can pool in the air.

    Best Wishes,''

I hope that helps anyone else who was interested. I think I'm going to go for Aphrodite!

    Thanks again.
