hydrangea flowers

Earlier this year I purchased a beautiful, white, lace cap hydrangea plant which I have planted in a pot which now sits on the patio. The flowers have almost finished flowering, do I cut them off or leave them and move the whole pot somewhere out of sight?

You can just cut the dead heads off. image

  • Thank you I will do that.

Christine you DONT dead head them till spring. That head will protect next year's flower buds from frost and rain damage over winter. Please leave them.

yes I'm backing up what Bob says. The dead flower heads offer valuable protection against frost.

  • Thank you for this advice. I will move the pot to a less obvious position and leave it alone.

As it's in a pot Christine, just make sure it doesn't go short of water. It's easy to forget about plants when you move them out of sight. I speak from experience....image

You may also need to pot it on quite quickly as they make big plants, and  need a lot of room to grow and produce flowers successfully. They don't really make good pot specimens long term, unfortunately.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks again. Plan is to plant in the ground eventually when it gets too big for the pot it is in. Hopefully I can leave it in the one it is in now for another season but will check. Will also take cuttings in the hope that when it outgrows the pot I will have another plant to put in its place in the pot.
