Saving Rosa 'New Dawn'
Hi
Can anyone please advise me on how to prune and rejuvenate my Rosa 'New Dawn'. Whilst I have had plenty of flowers again this year they all seemed to be growing on very thin and whispy stems with very little foliage and what foliage there is is now being attacked by mildew and blackspot.
it is planted a little away from my north-easterly garden wall and is in sunlight for most of the day.
i look at photographs that others post and mine definately looks like the runt of the litter.
Please help !!
Cathy

Have you fed it at all? Rose are hungry plants and should be given a generous dollop of slow release rose fertiliser or tomato feed every spring. Being close to a wall may also mean it is thirsty so make sure it gets a good drink with occasional feeds of liquid tomato food between March and late June. This should help it grow strongly and fight off diseases.
As for restorative pruning, the RHS has this "how and when" advice for climbing roses:-

Thank you so much. I spread a good layer of compost over the area in spring but I haven't fed it since.

As obelixx says, it needs a bit of extra sustenance by the sound of it. The more robust it is, the better able it'll be at fighting off disease. New Dawn is normally fairly trouble free.
The more goodness you can get in the soil, the easier that will be. If there's other planting nearby, that will compete for water and nutrients too. Some well rotted manure and compost added to the area will certainly beef it up a bit, as well as the specific food for encouraging flower development
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
