Help in identifying plant!

Hi all,

i have just moved into a property and the garden is a bit of a mess.

We have one plant that is unknown to us and wondering if you could help. It has been planted under a hawthorn hedge that we have now cut back. The soil seemed wet and there were lots of conifer clippings that had been left to rot on the floor

We have had suggestions of yucca and cordyline but have no idea. Also no ideas if it is dead or dying as the stem doesn't seem very stable, however this maybe due to the fact there seem to be Roots from conifer and a big tree all over the grass.

Any help in identifying and how to care for it gratefully appreciated ????

I think it is a cordyline. I would be tempted to get a big pot using John Innes No3 and lots of grit to help drainage, and transplant it into that and feed it up until you decide where to put it. What a very resilient plant to have survived all that!

  • Thanks for your help. At least I can look up how to care for it now I know what it is. I'll dig it up later and Hopefully it survives. from what I've read they like soil with good drainage and full-partial sun.  It's been strangled by hawthorn, in no sun, in rubbish soil so who knows how it has survived so long!
