Yes, approximately one third below ground is usual for any type of stake or post etc. An 8ft stake would seem appropriate. The safest and probably easiest way of driving it in is to use a fence post rammer. You can often pick them up cheaply on ebay etc. or they can be hired for about a fiver or so a day. In my younger days I hammered about 20 in with a sledgehammer while standing atop a pair of step ladders. Not to be recommended!

Or see if any of your neighbours have a pinch bar to make the initial hole. Then I would be up the stepladder (or preferably on a kitchen chair) to get the wooden stake in with my lump hammer!!

I haven't yet watched last weeks GW Mary370, but will have look when I do. My tree bends quite high up though...will have a watch.
