Overgrown Garden - design solutions needed
Hi
We've recently moved to Dorset but are now coming to realise that the garden, though lovely to look at, is becoming overgrown. The main problem is that there is a row of around 16 trees over 13 metres (Left hand side)
- (I think they are leylandii) - which if cut back will just show bare branches. They are overunning the flower border. We can have the trees removed but that will leave a wide strip of ground, approx 2 metres, and a bare fence. Its got so bad that we are thinking about moving because we cannot see any good solutions. Neither my partner or I have much gardening experience, and we are both pensioners to boot. You can see from the pictures that that it needs a lot of taking in hand.
Any creative solutions much appreciated.

Well done for moving to Dorset. Lovely place if you can avoid the traffic.
I'm a bit confused...........I am assuming the conifers are behind the hedge in which case, removing them won't show the fence. Correct me if I am reading the photos all wrong.
Are they providing any benefit? Screening something ugly, or road noise etc?
I'd rather deal with the bare fence( I don't think it's too ugly, but easily be disguised by new planting ) , and 2m of bare soil.
I'd remove them, take a nice while to look at it and think about options, but they're really horrible as they are now.
Hi
The conifers are the hedge. They are on the left hand side of the lower two pictures. They were taller but we reduced the height. They are about 10 feet tall since they have had the tops cut. The first picture shows the extent of the trees and is taken from the far end of the garden looking toward the house, along the fence that the conifers screen. The border plants in front of the conifers are being overgrown by the trees and squeezed out of a place to grow. The trees just hide the fence which is fairly ugly though functional. There is little noise in this area, even when the windows are open on the hot summers nights.
Sorry the explanation was not clearer -
