What is it on a Lily pot?

allyBBallyBB Posts: 28

Hi,

I bought a pot of Lily last year, it died in the Winter and then grew back this Spring.  The pot has 3 lilies, one of them grows normally with several new flowers, another 2 have no flower but something grew at the top (as photo).  I have never seen a plant like that before.  Does anyone know what is that?

I saw some root started to grow from those thing, I cut it out and planted it separately in a small pot, it is growing but only some leaves like grass, doesn't look like a plant as I don't see the stem, is it normal?  I guess it is a new Lily?

And also, I noticed that there was a tiny leave grew next to the original lily plant, is it a baby lily? or just some wild grass?

Thanks.

Some lilies reproduce by forming little bulbils up their stems - at the leaf joints - and this is maybe what these are. These can be planted and kept growing but it will be several years before they flower.

Oh, several years!  When I bought the pot, I was hoping it will grow flowers year after year...

Does that mean the original Lily plant is an old plant that will not grow new flowers anymore when they have these little bulbils up their stem?

No, if you snip off the top with the bulbs on, the leaves will put food back into the bulb for next year.  Keep it in a sunny place and give it a bit of feed and water.

Tigerlilies especially are prone to stem bulbils.

I did snip off the top with the bulbs on but I snip off the leaves as well, lol. I didn't know the leaves will put food back into the bulb before...

They are now growing like grass form, no stem at all, hope to have some little Lily plants next year, can't wait!

    Thank you Ladybird4 and fidgetbones!

How interesting. I am looking forward to my lily bulbs multiplying. I had one split this year, not long after it was planted. The bulb wasn't large at all.
