Connifer Problems
Hi all,
I've recently moved in to a property and I'm a bit stuck with what to do about dead conifers in the back garden (see pic).
Whoever had last cut them has cut back too far so they're looking pretty unsightly. I want to cut these down but it would mean losing out on the extra privacy they offer from the neighbouring garden.
Has anyone got any handy suggestions for something I can do/put up to keep the privacy once conifers removed? - putting up a 10ft fence seems a step too far.
As we've got 100 jobs to do in the house, I'm looking to keep costs as small as possible.
Thanks in advance for any help.
James

Gosh they do look rather sad. As you realise, they won't regrow at the base and really do need removing and then the soil they are in will need replenishing with lots of good well rotted compost/manure before you can think about planting anything else there. Perhaps you could do a few at a time as it would be expensive to buy suitably large shrubs to replace them. Joking aside and you probably already know this, legally you can only erect a fence that is 6 feet high between yourself and any neighbour.
You could leave the trunks in place and attach some of that split bamboo (quite cheap and readily available) or something similar to them to give instant privacy, and when you have the soil replenished, as Ladybird has said, you could replace the conifers with a hedge or evergreen shrubs in front of the screen.
You can paint that bamboo stuff too, so it'll blend in a bit better till other planting grows a bit.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
