What time of year are different plants in stock?

I've been looking both in stores and online for various plants that I'd like but it's surprised me that so many seem to be not available yet, or only for sale in a few months time.
Is there a good time of year for buying plants or does it depend on the specific type of plant? What time of year are they available? It's hard to plan things with the garden when I'm not sure when they come into stock.

Herbaceous plants tend to be on sale in garden centres when they are in flower, as they are easiest to sell then.
Many suppliers sell plants at the best time for planting them out. Bare root hedging will be available in early spring, rooted pelargonium cuttings a bit later in the season for instance. Container grown plants are usually available all year.
Thanks Ceres. It's all container grown plants I've been looking for but so many seem to say 'available by end of July', or early September etc or suggest an email reminder when they are available. I've been looking for a rhododendron, hydrangea and trailing ivy amongst other things.
I have been to some local garden centres but I found they didn't have the same selection and variety that is available online. Although they had plenty, they just didn't have exactly what I'm looking for. It seems you can get anything online but it's harder to find them locally. Having said that, maybe the plants in the local garden centres are the ones that grow best in this area.

I buy a lot of plants on line as you say because you want certain plants not available in garden centres living in the northeast I have bought from south and Scotland and have not had any problems I would recommend you take a look at these if you haven't all ready Walnut tree garden nursery and paddock plants I have received excelent plants and service from both
