Persistent weed with overground runners

This weeds is annoying. Spreads by red over-ground runners....horrible smell when stems or roots are damaged. Thought it might be Herb Robert  (Smelly Bob). Identification and advice please.

    looks like cinquefoil, Potentilla reptans, I can't say I've notice a smell to that

  • That's it!  Thank you Nutcutlet (nice name BTW!).  Maybe there's another weed that has the funny smell to it, which may be the Herb Robert - but you've hit the nail on the head with this weed that's really giving me bother.  Having Googled how to get rid of it, I feared that shear hard graft and meticulous getting the tap roots of established plants out the ground might be the only way to get rid of it!  What fun (NOT) !

  • I've told my neighbour that because it obviously spread into my garden from her's, that she needs to come and help me dig it all up ;-)  I may have to reciprocate though I suppose.  Might even do it over a glass of wine or 3!  Thanks again.
