Cherry (English) Laurel
Planted June 2014. These photos where taken 2years apart, the first year was a little disappointing. (Taken with the same phone only one before an economy wash) Since taking hold their growth as improved the soil wasn't the best. However I laid down manure a membrane and mulched with bark. I want the hedge to be around 5-6 foot should I just let it grow and trim next year to thicken the bottom

If you want thicker growth at the base then prune to encourage them to shoot from below the cut. Though to me they look to be bushing out nicely as it is. If there are decent basal growths them leave them alone to grow.
How about that for a non-committal answer?

They look very good to me, too - maybe just take a few inches off the leading tips to even it out and stop them shooting off skywards?
I grew 3 months ago and some of the leaves have turned yellow and falling off as well.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
