aubrieta

Hi everyone

I bought an Aubrieta for my back garden. it's currently planted between rocks and seems to be doing ok. the whole idea was for it to trail over the rocks but there is some long grass like plant (inherited when moved in) and it is completely hidden unless you look behind the bush. Is it ok to move it towards the front? if so when is best time to do it? alternatively how can i take cuttings from it?

P.S i'm completely new at gardening.

Hi Mary. Yes, you can move it. You may find that you could divide the clump if there are pieces that have roots on them. Now is a good time to take cuttings too and root them in cutting compost or even in sand.

  • Hi ladybird4

Thank you for the quick response. I will have a look at the roots and see if i can divide it otherwise i will transfer it completely. how many leaves need to be on the cutting ? and also is john innes compost ok to plant it in?

    Thanks :)

You just need to take the cuttings from a non flowering stem say about 1-2 inches long. Take off the bottom leaves - enough to leave say about half an inch free and thats the bit you insert into the compost. Its better not to use a multi purpose compost as you need one with no nutrients until the cuttingd start to grow. John Innes seed and cutting compost would be best but No1 at a push. Keep cuttings in a slightly shaded position until they have rooted. you can get 4-5 cuttings in a 9cm pot.
