Newbie

I have zero experience and need some pointers.....

Just moved into an old place and the gardens we're expertly maintained by the previous owners who have sadly departed.

Where do I begin?.....

I'll try to attach pics but the site complains the attachments are too large.

If you can resize your pix to under 2.5 mb they should load Chris. It's a pain but it's the only way just now  image

Plenty of people here who will help you with your queries image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I would agree that you should avoid digging - you don't know what dormant spring bulbs are in the ground, so wait till you find out.

Identify your plants, post pictures of them here and you'll get a response within hours/minutes then research them.

You can read all about their habits, when to cut them back, what conditions they like once you know what they are but chances are, your predecessors planted them wisely in good locations so your main purpose is to find out if say, they are evergreen, slow-growing, need cutting down in Spring or the more complicated ... flower on old wood (this can be an awkward group of plants where if you cut them back in Spring you'll never get flowers and if you never cut them back you'll get diminishing flowers - the trick is to cut half of it out where it flowered - don't worry, you'll learn!).

As others said, your first year is mainly mowing and hoiking out obvious weeds.  Perhaps make a photo album, by month, of what you see flowering where, so that you don't destroy anything.

I did this two years ago and last year saw new stuff coming up that didn't come up in the first year so you are in an enviable position and should be excited.

Don't be scared, the folks here will help.  Welcome to gardening - be warned, it's addictive! image
