Round circles appearing in lawn

Over the past few months round dead patches of lawn have been appearing in my garden. The garden is very mossy but looks ok and the moss is not something I have ever been concerned about. Never seen this before. We don't have pets. On one dead patch I have been able to just scrape up the dead moss/grass and it has left a perfect circle. Does anyone know what this is and how to treat it. Many thanks

It could be fungi growing under the soil's surface. The fruiting bodies (mushrooms) cause a 'fairy ring' in grass as they grow out of the mycelium (the thread like structures that form the main body of the fungus) so you may spot some in the Autumn

If fungi (fairy rings), you will generally also see a greener outer circle to the patch.  If that isn't present then pansyface may well be right.
