I came back from holiday and this tall, green clump of plants had appeared as if from nowhere! I have been in this house since April before last and the flowers and shrubs I inherited are much better than last Summer.

I was given the ground cover plant - taken from a larger clump - but the giver doesn't know the name.

Not sure about the first plant but you must have been on a long holiday!!! The second is London Pride (Saxifraga x urbium) image

Last pic, ground cover I've got.

Given from an established clump like you, with the common name "London pride".

Google tells me it's called " saxifraga urbium" image

  • Thanks for that Madpenguin & Kitty.  Re tall plant - I was in France for just about 4 weeks. The plant is in a slightly difficult to get to spot in the corner of my front garden so was probably only 2' high or so before I left. It was obscured by other plants but shot up while I was away. I wondered if it was a weed but it's in such a tidy clump I don't think it can be. Here is a closer pic. It has started producing more side leaves.  Any suggestions much appreciated.

    Maybe Evening Primrose

It looks a lot like Rose Bay Willow Herb. Leaves look wrong for Evening Primrose.

it might be a willow herb but not Rosebay WH. Grat WH maybe

If it's in a tight clump it's unlikely though.

Could the first one be Goldenrod (Golden Rod ???).

  • Ah that may be it! I seem to remember yellow flower heads that curve over? There was only one or two last year. Thanks !
