What has eaten my netted gooseberries?

Any ideas what has eaten my gooseberries?  They were a large, huge sized and healthy crop (no sawfly) a couple of weeks ago but I felt they weren't quite ripe so, as pigeons have been the culprits before, I covered the bushes with fine mesh net, pegged into the ground so birds, squirrels etc couldnt get in.  Saw a recipe for gooseberries today so went to pick them - not one left!!  Could it be mice?  Does anyone else have this problem?

Are they vulnerable to theft by humans? If the netting is still there I agree that anything as big as a squirrel or pigeon would get in. Could smaller birds have got in?

Thanks!  Will be extra careful next year!  It was a bumper crop too!
