You have a lovely collection of plants and it looks so much nicer than just grass.

Thank you. Yes I think so too. It gives me somewhere to have lovely flowers and I can grow more veg. I've had some odd comments about growing veg in the front garden (not from people on here) but my back garden has decking and patio and pond etc so space out there is used as much as it can be for veg but now I've overflowed into the front I can grow so much more. I've had more wildlife this year alone than I've had the entire time I've lived here put together

Its weird that veg (and deck chairs) are supposed to be confined to the back garden. I have herbs in my front garden in amonst the jungle of flowers........just hope the neighbourhood dogs don't pee on the thyme.

I agree - herbs and veg work really well at the front, especially as our front is in full sun. That's why I designed an entirely herbal garden for the competition at Hampton Court.

The garden looks amazing Sophie 17! I did a similar thing in mine - took out the scratty lawn and put in flowers and herbs - the pictures are at the end of my blog post. And I'm intending a post soon on making front gardens which are both ornamental and productive - it's the kind of gardening I enjoy best :-)

    I'll make sure I have a look

  • Recently we removed our old poured tarmac driveway, manky front lawn (burned brown in the summer and a soggy mess in the winter) and thr front privet hedge. We replaced it with a wider, kind of V-shaped driveway (permeable with a cubic metre of soakaway) and now have a large flower bed that has a lot of osteospermums and cosmos while the permanent and all bee/butterfly friendly permanent planting takes hold

Looks amazing! Glad the bees and butterflies are being catered for :-)

That looks fantastic Steve, we have a similar style house and funnily enough are having a grey driveway and raised bed done on Monday. Can't wait. Will post pics when it's done.
