One of the problems with seedlings is that when you are weeding it's easy to mistake them for grass and pull them out before you realise what you're doing. They don't like being moved and fiddled with but if you grow them in pots and just pot up when necessary they usually do  OK. You can then just grow them on until they are sturdy enough for outdoors. If you happen to be a slightly lazy weeder like me, they will seed themselves all over the place.

Agree with all that's been said so far re the "being patient" factor with Dieramas. I planted 4 specimens of Dierama pulcherrimum ‘Lancelot’ in June 2014. One has disappeared, two are quite small and one has grown quite large and is producing 12 flower stems right now. Well worth the patience! Great advice, thank you. I got a dierama blackberry bells in a wowcher pot luck deal in April. I planted it but now can't see it. I don't think I pulled it out while weeding. I didn't realise they took so many years to grow and flower....I'd better try and find it and pot it again. They're so pretty, lovely photos. Papi Jo you have amazing specimens of all plants.
