Sweet Pea

imageIs this normal or diseased for a sweat pea at this time of year?  It looks a bit ropey to me. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Possibly damaged by slugs or caterpillars.

You have my sympathy as lots of the plants in my garden look the same this year image

There were warnings of a slug explosion earlier this spring but I think all the other bugs decided to join in too.

    Leaf miner damage.

Are they planted in the grass? image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Any ideas how I might get rid of leaf miners? Or should I just give up and compost the whole thing? It does look somehwat battle weary!

  • Not planted in grass btw - potted.

They don't normally do too much damage - I remove any really dodgy leaves, but you do seem to have a lot. image

Are your plants a bit crowded?  Good air flow helps to keep plants strong and healthy. Pests and diseases often happen more  on weaker plants, so the sturdier they are when planted, the better.

Sweet peas like a good rich soil so it's important to give them enough food when they're in pots, once they start flowering.

Hope that's a little help. We have a dedicated sweet peas thread here. David will be able to give you more advice there. It's called Sweet Peas Know How   image

There's a bit of slug damage there, but that's mainly leaf miner damage.

I've bumped up the specialist sweet pea thread hh if you want some advice from David as to how to improve the problems...if it's possible image

I'm sure he'll be around later   image

  • This I where  I miss not being able to enlarge the pic. However, from what I see I would guess it's slug damage.

Sadly, that's only half the problem, I know garden centres sell this woven obelisks for growing sweet peas, but they are woefully inadequate and due to overcrowding/lack of air circulation, results in plants being under stress......and any plants under stress are very vulnerable to pests & disease.

I agree, which is why a close-up would have been useful. I was concentrating on the holy leaves.
