Heuchera

B3B3 Posts: 27,505

I have clay soil so I understand that growing heuchera in the ground is a no no.  I  wonder if any are suitable for a pot or container - preferably nothing too leery. I don't mind about cringe- inducing names as I will forget them.

On the contrary B3, heuchera grow very well indeed in my clay soil.  It also has the advantage that vine weevils don't like clay soil.  However, they LOVE potted heuchera and I have to heep an eye on them when growing on in pots before planting out.  Once they are in my soil they are safe from vine weevils.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Grow well in mine too B3 image

Still have to keep an eye out for the dreaded weevil though. I've had more weevils since I moved here three years ago, than I've ever had in any garden. image

I've "done" my pots with Provado and so far so good this year. Last year they were hammered! Some of the names are shocking but if you lose the labels they're fine! image

They are perfectly happy in my clay soil, chap at Hampton Court (specialist grower) told me the darker the leaves the more sun they will be happy with, and the lighter coloured leaf varieties prefer shade.  I did loose 1 over winter completely in a very wet spot, and the one in the pot dissappeared!

The good thing about heuchera is its ability to recover from vine weevil attack. I regularly find plants falling out of pots after the dreaded larvae have eaten through the stems so I just trim them vigorously and stick them in a new pot until they have rerooted.
