Perfect hedge
I want to grow a hedge of about 4 ft in height next to a brick wall in my drive. So far so good except that the channel for planting is about 12 inches wide and about 9 inches deep. I have struggled to grow laurels here and have just pulled them up and I'm wondering now what I can put in that would thrive in such a narrow planting channel. The channel can become quite wet. Any suggestions please?

Do you mean that the hedge will be against the brick wall? If that is correct then why not grow a climbing plant such as Hydrangea petiolaris or Schizophragma hydrangeoides. If it is not the case then how about Hornbeam - looks similar to Beech but will be quite happy with the wet soil whereas beech would not.
I'm not happy with the idea of trying to grow hornbeam in a space 12" wide with a soil depth of 9"

I don't think much will be happy in 9 inches of soil other than bedding plants.
I think you're right Dave,
