You lucky thing if it is what I think it is - an orchid. I think it may be the Common Spotted Orchid - Dactylorhiza fuchsii.

Cacoethes: An irresistible urge to do something inadvisable
  • Thank you for the replies, I thought it looked like an orchid, it's so tiny, and the leaves have little black spots on them, I'm not sure what to do with it though, I would appreciate any information, as to whether I should bring it indoors, I bought orchid compost just in case. Many thanks Wilma

My first thought was orchid too Ladybird4.  Could that just happen like that?

Wilma, if you want to keep it, transplant the whole pot. Don't try and  separate it from the surrounding soil or compost,  it will contain symbiotic bacteria and fungi that it needs.

If you don't want it, send it to me.

Yes jah. It can just happen like that. The tiny seeds can be in compost. On one of the roundabouts at a junction between the M58 and the M6 a lot of pit soil and compost was spread and within a few years the roundabout was covered in those very orchids - an absolute joy to behold and protected by their very position. Like fb I can only wish and dream.
