Mysterious conifer

Hi there!

During a garden visit in Kyoto I came across a beautifully pruned conifer. I asked what species that was, but couldn't get a scientific name.

Its parts smells nicely (they compared it to the sandalwood).
I attached the pictures of the specimen and a small sample I've got. I'm aware it's not much, but if you have a clue please let me know so that I will research and verify it!

Thanks, G

Looks like something from the cypress family. The nice Sandalwood smell you describe makes me think it could be a Thuja or Thujopsis rather than a Chamaecyparis or Juniperus [Japan has native species from all these genuses ] which tend to be more acrid.

could well be a thuja, I don't know many conifers. Could be something that we don't see in the uk.

You'd need something tight growing to cloud prune like that. I wonder how they trim the top bits

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
