I think it may be due to the wet growing conditions we've had this year. Try steaming them.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I don't grow them anymore for that reason, it didn't seem to matter what the weather. I grew them for a few years. There are so many different varieties why not try something different next year...
