Nandina Domestica

adamadamantadamadamant Posts: 278

I admire these and would like to plant them by my front door.  However I have trouble identifying the one I like most, as when I try to buy a specimen they are identified by variety names none of which I recognise.  I want the one with red leaves/berries in the autumn, white flowers earlier.  Is that 'Firepower'?  Also does anyone know how quickly they grow? Their final size as advertised is ultimately going to be too big.  I can take a height of about 5' but dont want a massive girth to the plant, there isnt room.  Any suggestions? Thanks

Fire Power matches the description for flowers, colorred leaves and fruits and will only reach about 0.5m tall and the same across.

Thanis.  I wonder if that is the one I want - there is one I can see in my neighbourhood which is already about a metre high so I may not be on the right track with Firepower after all.

I've got 'Richmond' - bought as a 10l pot, planted in spring and is currently about 2-3 feet tall.  Expecting it to get a fair amount larger but not massive.  I had a look at several Nandina and that was the one I wanted ?

'Fire Power' is probably not the kind of Nandina the OP is after. I recently planted a specimen of Nandina domestica ‘Brightlight’ which will accept sunlight, unlike most other Nandinas.

Thank you everyone, I'm grateful for your comments. I am going to repost once my laptop is repaired with a photo of the one I like, and queries about whether I can keep it to  a manageable size.  Have a good week everyone!!

I can recommend Nandina 'Plum Passion' which is more compact than the ordinary species and with beautiful leaf colour on the new leaves. They are brilliant plants with no pests or diseases, tolerant of sun or shade, drought or moisture, and evergreen. I loathe 'Firepower' which used to be the only compact variety for a long time, because it hasn't the elegance of the species. Useful to know is that they are narrower than they are tall so not troublesome as spreaders, at least in my experience so far. Brilliant plants, they are in my top 10 for sure. They never get huge, even the ordinary species, so a good choice for your situation, adamant--they won't overwhelm and are very elegant.

Me too! I also hate it because it is ubiquitous along streets, on roundabouts, etc. where I live. Definitely an un-elegant species!

I dont know the variety I had, it said on the label full sun, My garden actually faces N.E. but but because of the size and its not overlooked, gets sun most of the day, It wilted a lot last year, so we made sure it had plenty of water. It was quite a siable shrub, realised a few weeks ago, it has completely dissappeared!!!
