Monty Don's Stainless Steel trowel

Wobblycogs says:

I often see Monty's stainless steel trowel. It's just what I need for my raised beds. Does anyone know where I can get one of those trowels. Just the right shape for me to get into the soil. I would have to fit a long handle to it, but that's no problem to me. If I knew how to get in touch with  the "Man himself", I would!

Thanks in anticipation.

Some of the trowels he uses look more like bricklayer's tools than gardening ones.  Maybe they are?

Just found this American site but there's all shapes and sizes there.

If you are referring to the pointed one he uses then Sarah Raven does a similar looking one, pretty punchy price, but I'm sure there are other cheaper versions...

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

How do we mere mortals manage with just a couple of different types?  I only have 2, one wide and one narrow and seem get by without any obvious problems.  Style over substance seems to be creeping into even that most practical of areas - gardening.

It's all a matter of reasons for wanting different styles of tools. My soil is more gravelly than some river beds. I need something that will get through it. I also have physical disabilities that make it easier for me to use hand-trowels with a longer handle, despite already owning a couple of hand-fork/trowel sets, with which I once managed nicely. They are simple riveted steel, and over the years they have bent and rusted somewhat and they fall short now my strength isn't what it was. (At 77 one has to accept a little decline!)  So I think a long handled stainless set will see me out. The sharp pointed trowel like Monty's would be a good 'extra' for dealing with the gravel-bed I call soil!

So it isn't only a 'fad'. I save those 'fads'' for my woodwork tools! :)

Thanks to everyone for their contributions. I had a fun-browse looking for what I might find the best buy! image

Given the amount of bad reviews on Amazon, for some of the garden forks and trowels, I decided to pay the extra, and settled on Sneeboer and a Burgon & Ball garden fork. (Number One Son will be using that for me!). That's my savings dipped into! Thanks to everyone who advised me. Thanks again folks. Much appreciated.

  • Monty uses a Jeckyll trowel, they are fairly expensive but worth every penny.
