Moving Perennials

Morning GW,

I am still in my first real year of gardening and enjoying my garden in my first home.

Last autumn, and earlier this spring, I planted lots of bare root perennials and other shrubs, plants and bulbs.  However, I think I have made what I imagine is a common, novice mistake of putting too much 'stuff' too close together.

My question is, is it ok to lift and move herbaceous and hardy perennials now (so I can position them knowing what they will look like next year), or do I need to wait for the autumn/spring when the plants are dormant or have died back for the season?

Thanks all,

Hi mattbray. I think it would be better to wait until Autumn. As the plants are probably in full leaf now and were bare root when you put then in, then moving too early might give added stress to the plants. At the rate our so called Summer is progressing you might not have to wait too long! image
